Never the big light
On lamps, nervous systems, and why every room I have has three of them.
On why the ceiling light in my living room has not been switched on since March.
I did not know the big light was the problem for a long time. I just knew that evenings felt loud. I would get home, flick the switch, and something in my chest would tighten before I had put my bag down. I blamed the day. I blamed my brain, which has ADHD and takes most things personally. It did not occur to me to blame the light.
Then I read something about overhead lighting and nervous systems and switched every lamp in the apartment on instead, just to see. The room went warm and low and small, and my shoulders came down an inch. That was the whole experiment. I have not turned the big light on since.
I am not going to pretend a lamp regulates a nervous system. What I will say is that warm, low light tells your body it is evening, and my body needed telling. Bright white from the ceiling reads as a supermarket. A lamp at eye level reads as somewhere you are allowed to sit down.
So now every room has at least two, most have three, and none of them cost what a proper lamp is supposed to cost. Below is every one I own, grouped by where it lives.

Every room, softly lit.
The bedroom
The rule here is nothing above the bed, ever.

Globe table lamp
Small, warm, and the one I reach for first. The wooden base means it does not look like a hotel.

Scalloped wood sconce
Plugs in, screws to the wall, no electrician. The scallop is the bit people ask about.

This is where three lamps stops sounding excessive and starts sounding correct.

Light paper lantern pendant
Replaces the ceiling light without replacing the ceiling light. A dimmer bulb in it and the whole room goes soft.

Alabaster semi-oval table lamp
Looks like stone, glows like a candle. Sits on the floor beside the sofa, which I did not know was allowed.

Pleated khaki stripe ceramic lamp
The one that looks like it cost more than it did. Stripes, but quietly.
Shop nowThe corners nobody lamps
The hallway. The kitchen counter. The bit of wall by the door where you put your keys.

Faceted plug-in sconce
Red stripes on cream, the one pop of colour in the whole set. Plug-in, so it goes wherever there is a socket and a dark corner.

Scalloped glass candle warmer lamp
Not technically a lamp. It warms a candle from above so the wax melts without a flame, and gives off exactly enough light to find the kettle by.

Every lamp, saved to one ShopMy collection.
